Student Health Insurance in South Korea

International students in South Korea generally need health insurance during their stay.
This means enrolment in Korea’s National Health Insurance system. In almost every case this is mandatory
The exact timing depends on your visa and residence status.

Students are normally enrolled automatically once the relevant registration and residence conditions have been met.
You should still check the arrangements with your university, because the start date can differ depending on your visa type.

For example: Students with a D-2 visa are generally enrolled after foreigner registration. S
ome students with a D-4 visa may only become eligible after six months in Korea.
Official rules and timing can change, so always verify your own situation.

National Health Insurance Coverage

National Health Insurance helps reduce the cost of medical care in Korea.
Coverage generally includes medically necessary services such as: doctor visits; hospital treatment; diagnosis and treatment of illness or injury; certain health check-ups.
It does not mean that all healthcare is free. Patients usually still pay part of the cost themselves.

Do You Still Need Private or Travel Insurance?

• Temporary Health Insurance: Travel or private insurance can cover the gap between arrival and the start of Korean health insurance.
Additional Benefits: Travel insurance may cover repatriation, travel-related emergencies, lost luggage, and treatment outside Korea.
Policy Duration: Check the start and end dates of each insurance policy.

Costs

Students enrolled in National Health Insurance normally pay a regular insurance contribution.
The amount can change, so do not rely on old figures from blogs or student forums.
You will usually receive payment information from the National Health Insurance Service after enrolment.

Before You Travel

Check these three things:
1. When your Korean insurance coverage starts.
2. Whether you need temporary insurance after arriving.
3. Whether your university requires additional insurance.
Keep copies of your insurance details with your other important study documents.
Always use official sources:
- National Health Insurance Service Study in Korea
- Your university’s international office
